How merger-driven gas motions in galaxy clusters can turn AGN bubbles into radio relics

no code implementations3 Dec 2020 John A. ZuHone, Maxim Markevitch, Rainer Weinberger, Paul Nulsen, Kristian Ehlert

Many relics are found in the cluster periphery and have a cluster-centric, narrow arc-like shape, which suggests that the electrons are accelerated or re-accelerated by merger shock fronts propagating outward in the intracluster plasma.

Reducing the Athena WFI charged particle background: Results from Geant4 simulations

no code implementations2 Dec 2020 Catherine E. Grant, Eric D. Miller, Marshall W. Bautz, Tanja Eraerds, Silvano Molendi, Jonathan Keelan, David Hall, Andrew D. Holland, Ralph P. Kraft, Esra Bulbul, Paul Nulsen, Steven Allen

One of the science goals of the Wide Field Imager (WFI) on ESA's Athena X-ray observatory is to map hot gas structures in the universe, such as clusters and groups of galaxies and the intergalactic medium.

A New Bound on Axion-Like Particles

no code implementations21 Mar 2017 M. C. David Marsh, Helen R. Russell, Andrew C. Fabian, Brian R. McNamara, Paul Nulsen, Christopher S. Reynolds

Axion-like particles (ALPs) and photons can quantum mechanically interconvert when propagating through magnetic fields, and ALP-photon conversion may induce oscillatory features in the spectra of astrophysical sources.
