Chain Early Dark Energy: Solving the Hubble Tension and Explaining Today's Dark Energy

no code implementations26 Feb 2021 Katherine Freese, Martin Wolfgang Winkler

We propose a new model of Early Dark Energy (EDE) as a solution to the Hubble tension in cosmology, the apparent discrepancy between local measurements of the Hubble constant $H_0\simeq 74$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ and $H_0\simeq 67$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ inferred from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB).

Inelastic dark matter scattering off Thallium cannot save DAMA

no code implementations16 Feb 2021 Sunniva Jacobsen, Katherine Freese, Chris Kelso, Pearl Sandick, Patrick Stengel

We have expanded upon their work by testing whether the regions of parameter space where inelastic DM-Tl scattering gives a good fit to the most recent DAMA data survive the constraints placed by the lack of a DM signal in XENON1T and CRESST-II.

Natural minerals on Earth are as old as $\mathcal{O}(1)\,$Gyr and, in many minerals, the damage tracks left by recoiling nuclei are also preserved for timescales long compared to 1 Gyr once created.

We find that in the most optimistic case of a %-level understanding of the background shape, we can achieve sensitivity to DM-nucleon scattering cross sections up to a factor of 100 smaller than current XENON1T bounds for DM masses above $100\,$GeV.

Paleo-detectors: Searching for Dark Matter with Ancient Minerals

2 code implementations16 Nov 2018 Andrzej K. Drukier, Sebastian Baum, Katherine Freese, Maciej Górski, Patrick Stengel

For low-mass WIMPs with masses $m_\chi\lesssim10\,$GeV, the largest contribution to the background budget comes from nuclear recoils induced by coherent scattering of solar neutrinos.

With up to an order of magnitude lower polarization noise than maps from the Planck satellite, the high-resolution sky maps will constrain cosmological parameters derived from the damping tail, gravitational lensing of the microwave background, the primordial bispectrum, and the thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects, and will aid in delensing the large-angle polarization signal to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio.
