Compiling transients in the literature with $t_\mathrm{rise} <5$d and $M_\mathrm{peak}<-20$mag, we find that a significant number are engine-powered, and suggest that the high peak optical luminosity is directly related to the presence of this engine.

AT2018cow: a luminous millimeter transient

1 code implementation25 Oct 2018 Anna Y. Q. Ho, E. Sterl Phinney, Vikram Ravi, S. R. Kulkarni, Glen Petitpas, Bjorn Emonts, Varun Bhalerao, Ray Blundell, S. Bradley Cenko, Dougal Dobie, Ryan Howie, Nikita Kamraj, Mansi M. Kasliwal, Tara Murphy, Daniel A. Perley, T. K. Sridharan, Ilsang Yoon

Regardless of the nature of this central engine, this source heralds a new class of energetic transients shocking a dense medium, which at early times are most readily observed at millimeter wavelengths.

The Cannon: A data-driven approach to stellar label determination

no code implementations29 Jan 2015 Melissa Ness, David W. Hogg, Hans-Walter Rix, Anna Y. Q. Ho, Gail Zasowski

New spectroscopic surveys offer the promise of consistent stellar parameters and abundances ('stellar labels') for hundreds of thousands of stars in the Milky Way: this poses a formidable spectral modeling challenge.
